About the Program

Molecular Biotechnology encompasses fundamental science as well as a number of specialist areas such as genetic modification, the development of new drug products, information biosciences and resource management. The applications in molecular biotechnology are vast - covering health, food processing, veterinary science and agriculture.

The Molecular Biotechnology Program aims to provide innovative teaching programs to turn today's students into tomorrow's specialists, able to contribute to the growing molecular biotechnology industries in Australia and beyond its shores.

We offer a range of four courses - one undergraduate (UG) and three postgraduate (PG). We also offer Honours study for enthusiastic, bright students. The program is taught by dedicated academic staff from the Schools of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Molecular & Microbial Biosciences with contributions from guest lecturers from industry and academia. Graduates of the program have gone on to exciting and challenging careers in biotechnology.

History

The Molecular Biotechnology Program at The University of Sydney was founded in 2000 and developed with the generous assistance of our industry partners and the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training through the Science Lectureships initiative. Four coursework degrees were offered for the first time in 2001. The program teaches approximately 200 UG and PG students in an innovative crossdisciplinary approach involving guest lecturers from industry and student participation in an industry project.
